How it works

Scientific Compass UP shows bibliometric figures for journals exactly as the ScientiaRank engine prepares them. The portal only displays the data — it does not recompute it, issues no verdict of its own, and never compares one source against another.

What the portal shows and where the data comes from

The data draws on SCImago (SJR) and Clarivate (Web of Science). From these, the ScientiaRank engine builds consolidated, versioned snapshots that carry both the values and the assigned bands. The portal only loads these snapshots and presents them as read-only dashboards. Every displayed number is fixed by the snapshot version and its provenance.

How the “best” figure is chosen

When a journal has several rows in one edition (across FORD fields), the portal picks one to display. The selection rule is fixed: higher percentile, then better rank in field, then lower FORD code. This rule recomputes nothing — it only selects among values the snapshot already holds. It applies separately to each source (SJR and AIS) and to each edition.

What the portal does not compute

The portal performs no calculation that would produce a number the snapshot does not contain: it computes no averages, re-issues no bands, and voices no “better of Scopus or WoS” verdict at the journal level. If a figure looks wrong, the fix belongs in the ScientiaRank engine, not on the portal.

Access to data and the three tiers

The portal distinguishes three access tiers. Publicly available data (notably SCImago/SJR) is visible to anyone on the internet. Figures derived from AIS and JIF (Clarivate/Web of Science) are licensed for internal university use — they appear only from the UP network or over VPN. The third tier, labelled Bb, is for a narrow group of authorised users and is reached by signing in. The portal does not hold data at this tier yet.

  • Public tier — data that may be redistributed on the internet (notably SCImago/SJR with the required attribution).
  • Institutional tier — data licensed for internal university use (AIS/JIF from Clarivate), available from the UP network or over VPN.
  • Bb tier — person-level figures, available to a narrow group of authorised users after signing in; the portal does not hold them yet.

How to reach the data from the UP network

If you are at a UP workplace or connected to the university VPN, the figures licensed for internal university use appear as well. The access indicator in the page header tells you which tier you are in. The deliberately locked (blurred) blocks always link here: they stand for data available from the UP network, not for hidden content that a click would unlock.

Editions and what a “vintage” means

The engine processes data by editions (JCR years and the matching SCImago periods). On the journal page you can switch between the editions for which ranking rows exist. An edition may be marked as vintage: its bands correspond to previously published output rather than a fresh recompute. The provenance of each edition is always stated next to its figure.
